Netley Military Cemetery
This cemetery was used for many years for military burials
from the Royal Victoria Hospital. The graves include those
of 721 casualties from the First World War and 36 of the
Second World War, comprising servicemen and women from the
following coutries:
United Kingdom: 558 Australia: 49 Canada: 42 New Zealand: 12
South Africa: 6 Undivided India: 5 Belgium: 15 Poland: 1
Austria: 1 Germany: 68.
The Cross of Sacrifice alongside this plot was erected after
the First World War.
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission is responsible for
the maintenance of these graves.
Hospital Buildings
The hospital was started in 1856, when Queen Victoria laid
the foundation stone on 19th May; it was completed in 1863.
In total the building was nearly 1/4 mile long. Built of
Portland stone with plinths of Welsh Granite it consisted of
a central block with 2 long wings on either side.
All the front windows, over 200, were arcaded and with the
elaborate towers and the chapel's central dome, it provided
a magnificent sight from Southampton Water.
